Hi All - this is a cross post.

 

I am seeing a baby today with a cleft of the soft palate.  In my research
all I can seem to find is not so great outcomes for breastfeeding due to
inability to create negative pressure because the tongue cannot seal off the
soft palate (because it is not there).  

 

My focus with the parents today will be a full assessment of the baby,
determine if this baby is at all able to get milk with Dancer hand support,
breast compression and upright feeding, and make sure there is no tongue
tie, or other structural/muscular issues.  Also, I will be supporting mom
with milk supply concerns.

 

Are there any reports, or has anyone worked with a baby with a cleft of the
soft palate who was able to breastfeed?  If so - how?
