But the WHY usually isn't that hard to find - Pethidine, epidurals, oral
suctioning, instrumental deliveries, early inductions, separation of mother
and baby, and we could both go on and on. And the prevention is possible,
but is the role of other health professionals - and isn't looking good at
the moment (particularly what I read from the States).

Our job is in picking up the pieces. So, again my question is, should we
be so complacent with babies who don't WANT to feed for >12 hours? Is it
really normal that they can be left for up to 24 or more? I don't like
it. I'm not saying they should be forced to the breast or that they should
be bottle fed (or any other way) that other white muck that is passed off
as suitable infant nutrition. But I do think they could be receiving their
own mother's milk, even just trickled into the corner of their mouth so
you're doing nothing to mess up their suck.

This protects the lactation (my original aim) and keeps the baby in good
condition without unduly harming him.

Denise
