Nikki Lee talks about integrating breastfeeding sound bites throughout
childbirth classes. This is exactly what I used to do when I taught
them. When talking about adaptations to pregnancy in class 1 I'd
mention how the breasts begin to develop machinery to make milk very
early, because of the importance of human milk to the newborn's immature
immune, digestive and nervous systems. When talking about stage 3
labor, I'd talk about the baby's breastfeeding loosening the placenta
and reducing bleeding. And I modeled attachment parenting, dragging my
own baby along to roll around the mats on the floor, cuddle, and
breastfeed during classes. Most of my classes were done for low income
families in public hospitals and family planning clinics...this approach
worked very well.
