I'm posting this for a fellow lactnetter who is unable to get a post through
so I don't have a lot of details.

G3P2 mom of a healthy 34 weeker has just been diagnosed with lung cancer.
The type of tumor is unknown as yet - a biopsy was done but they are not
expecting an answer for a few days. Apparently very fast growing, it went
from walnut size to grapefruit size in 2 weeks time. It is partly in the
lung and part "outside the chest cavity". Mom has been pumping and freezing
her milk. She breastfed her other 2 children and would very much like to do
the same with this baby - or at least give baby the pumped milk. There was
some concern about the baby having aquired the cancer as well through the
placenta, but there is no evidence if this as far as I know.

She is not on chemo yet, as they don't have a diagnosis. We were searching
for some documentation in the literature about it being safe to breastfeed
[or give the previously pumped milk] until starting chemo. The new Lawrence
alludes to that, but doesn't come out and say it. Does anyone have any
references or personal experience with this? We would like to share some
information with the doctors and the family. Please post to the list if
possible.

TIA
Gail Hertz, MD, IBCLC
