We have adapted the LATCH scoring system for use in the NICU with great
success. 1) The nurses are 97% compliant with scoring once a shift, which
means going behind those curtains and observing the feeding. 2) It is used
to decide how much to supplement 3) The LC's use the nurses' score to
evaluate where things are going well and where they are not when they are
not in attendance for the feeding 4) It is far more objective than "bf
well" or "poor" etc.
It has gone well enough that the corporation is planning to use this
adaptation in all the NICU's. It may not be perfect, but it is a step in
the right direction for more objective evaluations of breastfeeding
sessions, and as a recorded marker of progress, or lack thereof.
