Prolonged Breast-Feeding May Protect Against Childhood Leukemia, Lymphoma

WESTPORT, CT (Reuters Health) Mar 08 - The risk for childhood acute leukemia 
and lymphoma appears to be higher among children who were breastfed for less 
than 6 months compared with children breastfed longer. 

Dr. S. Denic and associates, of the United Arab Emirates University, in Al 
Ain, identified 117 children with acute lymphocytic leukemia, Hodgkin's 
lymphoma or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma treated at one hospital between 1983 and 
1997. They selected a 117-member control group of healthy children matched by 
sex and year of birth. Patients and controls were all Bedouin Arabs. 

Breast-feeding for 6 months or less was associated with an odds ratio of 2.79 
for contracting a lymphoid malignancy compared with those breast-fed for 
longer than 6 months, Dr. Denic's group report in the current (January) issue 
of the European Journal of Cancer. The association remained significant when 
multivariate analysis was conducted. 

The authors believe that with this finding and others, "the protective effect 
of longer breast-feeding against childhood leukaemia and lymphomas is now 
more firmly established."
