Hi Melanie,

This kind of thing makes me crazy.

This is not a simple just give pediasure situation, in my opinion.

You say the baby is breastfeeding well and has been all along. What was the birthweight? Was baby always at 4th percentile and has been following that curve.

It may be a red flag (why is baby small) or it may be normal (genetics). How is baby doing developmentally? If baby is bf well, has the milk supply been abundant, does baby bf frequently, transfer milk well? Always have free access to the breast? Pacifier, scheduling?

Why give formula which is inferior to breastmilk, if breastmilk is available? Why give pediasure, if breastmilk is available and appropriate foods? Why give water????? (no calories there).

I think first it has to be determined if bf indeed has progressed normally, and then why is baby falling off the curve now? Any history allergies? reflux s/s? Illnesses

during first year? What are mom/dad stature, other siblings? I think increasing bf is a better option and looking closely at what really is going on. I would need to be working with a bf-friendly doctor. If possible, I would try to find a bf medicine specialist to see them. Breastmilk does not hurt babies.
