Nina,

A number of years ago I was consulted by one of our peds attendings to speak with a mom who had made a number of visits to the ER because her baby was turning blue. They finally admitted the baby for observation and ran a battery of tests. The baby turned blue several times after admission and they called me to watch the baby breastfeed, since I had initially seen her in-hospital after birth. Without going into all the details, permission was eventually obtained to secretly videotape mom interacting with her baby alone. She was breastfeeding the baby, burying the nose in the breast until the baby turned blue and than pushing the nurse call bell. So sad. The only case I ever saw like this in my 25 years of counseling breastfeeding mothers, and I never would have guessed it.

Hi Wendy

There is significant controversy around whether such a disorder actually exists. If it does it is *extremely* rare. Most of us have only ever heard the term because the media has sensationalised a handful of very sad abuse/neglect cases (globally). Only after ruling out every other more likely scenario ... PND, cluelessness, strict routines, history of maternal childhood abuse, metabolic disorder, inadequate feeding, etc ... would it even be worth considering chasing this zebra.

cheers
