Virginia: You are so right! It appears not only do we humans not trust
ourselves to nuture our own babies, but now we say that other mammals
(polar bears and Sumatran tigers) also are not to be trusted to do the right
things for their babies. Granted, even though the zoo environment (even with
continuing attempts to duplicate an animal's normal environment) has got to
be the worst environment to put an animal in, most are resilient enough to
cope with the less than ideal circumstance they find themselves in. Why not
let a mother mother her baby to the best of her ability in the zoo, intervening
only if it appears that she cannot or will not?
Knut the polar bear is so adorable, I hope he makes it!
