Thanks to Jack, Joy and Maureen for their replies to my question on
Micronor.I am receiving quite a few reports of decreased supply when mothers
start taking Ovrette (containing 0.075 mcg norgestrel), one of my clients
was prescribed this, and took it the day following delivery! I'm convinced
it has an effect - within 3 or 4 days of commencing the Ovrette - Sx resolve
within about 5 days of stopping it. Mothers report fussy babies, decreased
breast fullness, reduced infant urine output, markedly decreased feeding
interval, babies wanting to breastfeed "all day long", very frequent night
waking etc. I'm keeping careful notes. Maybe it only affects some women,
maybe only if taken before lactation is well established?? I'm trying to
collect info on various different progestins too - some reported to have
estrogenic effects, some androgenic, perhaps this makes a difference? Wyeth
are supplying Ovrette to Zimbabwe at reduced cost as part of a USAID deal -
why is this? I've written to Wyeth in UK asking for copies of their
research articles (this minipill was apparently first put on the market in
1969) to support their contention that Ovrette has no adverse effects on
lactation, and asking how "breastfeeding" was defined etc. I'm not holding
my breath for a reply, but would really like to know the answers.

Pamela, Zimbabwe
