Jan B and problem of night time "shakes"

I would take a complete diet history before being reassured that eating doesn't help. It sure sounds like low bl sugars to me. If she is slender, is maintaining wt since the birth, she may not be taking in sufficient calories overall. I would do the history, calculate the total calories based on her ht/wt/metabolic rate, and suggest a combination protein - carbohydrate snack as soon as she wakes up. Give it 10-20 minutes to take effect. Overall calories should be sufficient, but the timing of these is important too. That time of night is not uncommon for bl sugars to be running low. Just some thoughts. Michelle Scott, RD,MA,IBCLC in NH
