I am replying to the Email about the Colorado breastfeeding legislation. It
is imperative you either stop the bill or get the amendments removed. In
Ohio we had a similar situation we chose no bill over one that includes
restrictions. Because these restrictions actually remove rights that already
the mother has.
When this situation arrose here I went myself along with a few others and
personally presented to committee that this bill was unacteptiable in any
form that provided a clause for discreation. Because descretion is not
quantifialble, if for instance a mother was to allow her nipple to be seen
then the bill would not protect her it would have the oppossite effect.
Suppose then another mother is in a shopping mall and is for all intents
decreet, but some one notices her nursing, they find nursing in public
offensive so in their eye she was not descreet enough because they knew she
was nursing. No that portion should be removed or it should be trashed. As a
individual who has for a long time worked on public breastfeeding issues I
had the help of Liz Baldwin from time to time before she passed away. This
was her opinion also, no legislation is better than bad legislation. I have
read the bill that you sent and it is good, but the ammendments must go, I
would encourage all involved to potest loudly to the legislature and
quickly. Pointing out and providing the medical documentation where needed.
The bill could read simply that Colorado beleives in the importance of
breastfeeding for the health of infants and thus will preserve and protect
it. By preserving and protecting breastfeeding all issues surrounding it
fall into place. No need for public indecincy issues to enter the picture,
no need to mention custody, no need to mention jury duty. Get rid of that
word descreet!!!, or get rid of the bill.
