In older children and adults, red colored urine is due to the disease
porphyria, which affects the kidneys and liver. Porphyria is either a
hereditary DNA change or an acquired change from chemical exposure to
benzene and other …ene ending chemicals—such as military personnel in
Desert Storm coming home with red urine. The movie “The Madness of King
George” mentions it, however today it is suspected the “madness” had
another cause and it’s not a usual effect of the disease. I wonder if
porphyria shows up at birth in rare cases.
