I work in 2 different community hospitals. We have had several adoptive moms
nurse their newborns in the hospital setting; in my role as LC I visit the
adoptive mom just as though she had given birth in our hospital, offering
her the same services we offer to other moms and babies. I have worked with
adoptive moms in the room with the birth mom when this is comfortable to
both individuals involved. If either is not comfortable with this, I work
with the adoptive mom and baby in the feeding room (a place provided by the
hospital for moms whose babies are hospitalized following mom's discharge).
The only thing required in order for the adoptive mom to nurse the baby in
our setting is a written statement by the birth mom that the adopting
parents have her permission to parent the newborn in the hospital. The
hospitals have a standard form for this. When appropriate, we add the words
"including breastfeeding" and the birth mom signs the form.
