I taped the shield for this baby because he and his mom had a 2 1/2
week history of unsuccessful latching. I wanted to remove as many
tiny obstacles as I could, and hoped that placing the shield well and
taping the edges of it would free her hands and brain somewhat more.
Since we were doing a "bait and switch" - baby on bottle, then *whisk*
baby at breast - her hands and brain were pretty busy as it was. I
didn't want to find the shield suddenly positioned somewhere other
than on her nipple just when her baby got interested.

Maybe the tape helped initially, but after a few back and forth
attempts he had pulled it free of the tape. But by then he was
accustomed to the feel of the shield anyway.

So no, I don't do it routinely.
