The *active* ingredients in tinctures are not the alcohol, so I recommend
to mom that she put the tincture into hot water and let it sit for 15-30
mins, during which the alcohol is dissipated.

We debated this last year. I am of the opinion that treating mom for her
baby's "colic" is effective. I'm not sure why. I don't believe that the
substance gets through the breasts to the milk but, instead, something
goes on in Mom's system. You all know my fondness for Rescue Remedy. I
find that if Mom takes it in whatever she drinks throughout the day, baby
has less GI distress. (And they usually say that the 2 year old and 4 year
old behave better too.)

My unscientific reasoning is that if I can create an ulcer by worrying,
then I could conceivably spill some irritant into my breastmilk. (As I'm
sure I did.) The calming teas or tinctures affect Mom's whole system, to
the benefit of herself, baby, and anyone around.

I am cautious about not implying that mom's "state" is causing her baby to
be in pain. (we all know where that would lead) but if they can achieve
some calm in this period there will be benefit, however it happens.

I predict that someday such speculation will be "proven." But, for now, it
is "my humble opinion."
