re diane herforth's comments: I too believe some of the women I see who seem
to sabotage themselves do have such a history. The problem is that many have
such repressed memories that *they* don't know it either! Cecelia DesLauriers
has taught me much about this. She suggests giving the mom more control by
acknowledging how hard it is to draw the baby in close, for ex. and asking
what I could do to help her. I'd been leaving the room and complaining to a
coworker how resistant she was. If we delve into the BF problem I may be able
to allude to some problems that seems to be assoc. w/ a history of sexual
abuse. Cecelia didn't seem to think it was necessary to hit her in the face
w/ the possibility.
 I also encounter a good number of moms who report significant breast
sensitivity which makes any suckling painful. These women report significant
pre-pregnant sensitivity- often I'll ask if she enjoys involving her breasts
in lovemaking. the answer is usually an emphatic NO. of course it got worse
w/ the pregnancy. A few women seem to be able to transcend the
pain/discomfort but others will literally tear the baby away from the breast-
despite an apparently great latch on.
I guess I'm getting into some speculation now but it certainly is something
to consider when your client is acting so hypersensitive.
