The dietitians at Alberta Chidlren's Hospital, Calgary, Alberta, Canada,
were wondering if you have any references or ideas to our following
dilemma.

For calorie counts (a record of what a child/infant eats/drinks throughout
the day - 24 hrs) and fecal fat tests (to see if a child is malabsorbing fat),
we encourage the mothers to breastfeed, however, we are unable to
determine the exact amount of breastmilk consumed.

We are using 1 oz (30 mL) of breastmilk for 5 minutes of breastfeeding.

Some other ideas for infants not on solids is to estimate 150 mL/kg
breastmilk which would provide approx 1 oz kcal/kg or weigh the baby
pre and post feeds. For children on solids we weigh pre and post
breastfeeds also.

Any references/ideas would be appreciated. What are you doing at your
facilities?

Thank you for your time.
