Carol Brussels wrote that her US relatives breastfed for one year or
more through the summer.

By contrast, my 90 year old mother-in-law tells me that she had trouble
from the very beginning. After much discussion and watching how I
managed bf with my three, she has concluded that the hospital practices
of the 20's and early 30's contributed much to her problem. Her babies
were kept in the central nursery all night and only brought to her q 4h
during waking hours. She remained in the hospital for 10 days each
time.

Once home, she was unprepared for the fact that the babies wanted to
nurse often and during the night. She quickly concluded that her milk
was inadequate as the specially concocked formula using evaporated milk
and boiled water and corn syrup, handwritten by the MD kept the babies
quiet for much longer. (By the way that formula was different for each
baby, as doctor had some rules about how much baby weighed at birth and
at each visit which effected the composition of the formula)

She had weaned completely by 3 months as she is small busted and doctor
told her that many small busted women were unable to produce adequate
breastmilk for their babies. How could it be otherwise on a four hour
schedule?

Melinda
