Julia: A couple of thoughts: maybe the reflux
medication is not working. I worked with a couple
which displayed very similar symptoms...the baby was
on and off so much, I didn't see how the baby gained
weight, which he did. This went on for weeks and
weeks. The problem was severe reflux, followed by
severe respitory problems which is not uncommon in
these cases. The reflux diagnosis was made pretty late
with this baby...BF had been stopped, baby ill several
times, etc. The whole reflux picture should be
reevluated, maybe by a gastroenterologist. However, be
ready for the recommendation of weaning and a special
formula.

Second: perhaps it is something the mother is
ingesting, ie caffine. I recall working with a mother
who drank several cups of coffee in the morning to get
going...really wound the baby up. As soon as she
stopped it, the baby went back to peaceful nursing.
Look for something early in the day and something
which is taken daily. Best wishes, Anne Andrianos
