I have recently subscribed to Lactnet after having joined a hospital
in Wisconsin to begin a lactation program.  We are a level III
center.  The NICU manager has been interested for quite a while in
doing Kangaroo care, but has been met with much resistance from
staff and neonatologists.  She asked me to find out which of the
larger hospitals (>1000 births/year) in the U.S. have been doing
K-care for a while, how has it been working, at what age does your
hospital start it, and if anyone would be willing to send me a copy
of your policy that governs its use.  I am really excited to get
into a new position with management wanting to reach similar goals
to mine.

Also, I wonder how many hospitals have a feeeding policy that
requires healthy newborns to be put to breast every 2-3 hours in the
first 24 hrs.  This is our policy in order to avoid jaundice.  I
would prefer to put rooming-in and education of early feeding cues
into the policy and stop the clock watching by staff.
Unfortunately, all of the literature I have read says the standard
"all infants should be breastfed 8-12 times in 24 hrs".  Does that
really take into account the INITIAL 24?
