Daar Lactnet Friends:

Thank you Debbie Swank, for sharing a new study on infant sleep from
Portugal.

The first sentence turned me off:

"Sleep disturbances are frequent in infants. "

This turns me off because the real problem is society, that wants infants
to sleep on schedule,i in ways that are not part of the biologic template.
Society is disturbed, not infants.

Society wants mothers to breastfeed for a long time, yet denies the dyad
the one strategy that could make this happen easily, especially when
mothers return to their jobs. I am talking about bed-sharing.

The AAP policy is inconsistent. "We know breastfeeding mothers are more
likely to breastfeed longer when the infant is in bed with them. We know
that breastfeeding reduces the risk of SIDS. We recommend the infant sleep
on a separate surface from the mother."

What sort of logic is this??

Yes, I know there are situations where babies should never be in bed with
the mother; why can't we tell people the truth? If you are drunk or stoned
or obese, if your bed is soft and full of pillows and pets, if there is
tobacco in the home, or if there is any adult but the parents in bed . . .
don't do it.

But such policies deny the people without those risk factors this lovely
biologically welcoming practice .

sigh. . .
