Thanks to ALL who responded with comments to help me about the newborn treated
with an IV and formula on our unit.

I talked to the neonatologist today and he seems to be on my side, however, he
did say that there is ALOT of discrepancy regarding what is hypoglycemia and
what isn't hypoglycemia. Says there is a trend towards higher numbers such as
is reflected in WHO recommendations. Asked me to ask ALL OF YOU OUT THERE the
following: In the absence of pathology, have any STUDIES been done that
compares the LONG TERM effects of well term infants who had blood sugar levels
of 30-40 in the first 24 hours of life VS. same babies who had blood sugar
levels >50 in first 24 hours of life? He feels like research is reporting
more and more towards increasing the normal blood sugar level to 45-50 and
wants to know if babies have lower IQ scores or any other detrimental long
term effects of having lower blood sugars in 30-40 range in first 24 hours.
Hope I explained this well enough. He said he went on PubM__ to search for
some studies on this and could not find anything. I told him I would ask you
guys. Hopefully we will revise the blood sugar protocol but when WHO states
"47", what are you going to do? TIA. Loni Denman, RN, IBCLC
