Here's my letter to the New York Times:

Speaking of women who can’t breastfeed ("Breast-feed or Else", June 12,
2006) makes it sound as if thousands of us are physically unable to
breastfeed. Yes, some breastfeeding problems are physical, but most stem
from structural problems within our society.

Most mothers in America choose to breastfeed, but many of them hit
obstacles. Breastfeeding is sabotaged by ill-informed or non-supportive
doctors, nurses, and hospitals, by family members, work-mates and neighbors.
Most mothers have no paid leave from work; many get no leave at all. TANF
rules require mothers to go out for training, leaving their babies behind.
Few jobs provide crèches or let babies come to the worksite. Student mothers
are expected back in class two weeks after birth... without the baby.

By telling the truth about the shortcomings of formula, the breastfeeding
campaign might help motivate everyone—not just mothers but the whole
community—to fix these deficiencies. Healthier, smarter children benefit us
all.
