I have followed a girl for now 6 years with biliary atresia who had to have
surgery by the kasai procedure and then a liver transplant and has done
remarkably well to the surgerons and the liver specialists amazement and
thanks to breastfeeding.
The key issues here are 2:
the digestibility of breast milk makes it the ideal food for these very ill
babies who simply cannot digest cows milk or other artificial milks that
lack lipase and dozens of other enzymes and the proper composition of
breastmilk simply because they have little or no bile flow.
the second issue is that igA deficiency is the leading cause of death after
graft rejection ,which is now treatable, in children with liver transplants.
Therefore breastmilk being the best source of igA (if not the only one) is a
real life saver for these children and forget about these hypothetical
problems of augmentin.
yes this baby should absolutely be breastfed.
