My understanding is that a waterbed is too soft for an infant.  Maybe
someone else knows more.  This might be a good use for a "side car" or
porta-crib set up with one side down right next to the main bed.  It
might not give 100% feedback but it is certainly preferable to completely
separate sleeping.
