Pamela, what a fantastic, thought-provoking post!

<At the beginning of the
year I was privileged to accept the job of co-coordinator of the task
force
on children's nutrition rights for the World Alliance for Breastfeeding
Action (WABA) and I realize that this is a huge issue. I agree that
there
is a lot of work to do!>

Whoever decided to offer you that job certainly knew what they were
doing! Your passion and deep thinking on this matter are an inspiration
to all of us to see how each one of us, individually, can change the way
we phrase things to mothers with whom we interact!

I was reminded of something I posted on July 18:

<<I haven't had a chance to read the rest of the site, from a
"Breastfeeding: Science and Society" conference, convened by the
Pontifical Academy of Sciences and The Royal Society, in Vatican City in
May 1995. But the table of contents,
http://www.unu.edu/unupress/food/8F174e/8F174E00.htm#Contents
looks intriguing, with discussion of work by Woolridge, Hartmann and
some other well-known researchers.>

(Woolridge) < . . . .extending the newborn infant the courtesy of being
regarded as an individual in its own right, rather than as an imperfectly
formed automaton to be directed as we see fit. . . . .recognize that the
newborn has as much right to choice as the mother, although there is an
obvious practical constraint on this choice being "informed.">
