The most compelling research on SIDS vulnerability IMHO is that on brainstem serotonergic neurons involved in the gasp response to hypoxia during sleep. This brain mechanism seems to be defective in some babies,  particularly if mom smoked during pregnancy (and compounded by maternal drinking and paternal smoking). So these kids are very vulnerable to anything that causes hypoxia,  including exposure to second hand smoke or smoker's breath; over heating, loose bedding,  prone positioning.

Since this mom quit as soon as pregnancy was diagnosed,  the baby should be better off.  If she's wavering in her decision to remain smoke free,  you can share the research that kids who grow up with a smoking parent have triple the risk of lung cancer and much higher risk of asthma.

Subject: SIDS, risk associated with smoking and co-sleeping

Helen - thank you so much for the info you sent on SIDS, with the
links. So great to hear this information from someone who has
studied the topic - I will pass it on. I had no idea that levels of
arousal were the important factor here - nor that those exposed to
smoking slept more deeply than those in smoke-free
environments. Fascinating!

Ruth - thank you too, for very similar info expressed in a different way.

And Jane, thanks for your thoughts, also expressing similar thoughts
to Ruths last sentences.

The sharing of research and experience on Lactnet is awesome! Also
very nice to see similar ideas described differently by different
people, which facilitates learning!!

Pamela (gratefully in Rustington, England).
