Dear Mary Kay,
When my children were in elementary school, they had a "muffins for
mom" party around Mother's Day, in the school cafeteria. On the front table
was the LARGEST baby bottle I have ever seen--used for a decoration. It was
at least 4 feet tall and on the table it stretched to at least 6 feet. I
approached the school principal (a woman and a mother herself) and told her
that as a lactation consultant, I would like to see the image of a bottle
signifying motherhood changed; that we are trying to make breastfeeding the
cultural norm. I suggested that next time they display some books regarding
mothers and named some that I know have breastfeeding in them. She looked at
me a little strange, but the next year I did not see the bottle on display.
Changing the world--one person at a time, one mother at a time, one baby at a
time.
Keep up the good work!
