I feel that you were describing exactly what I saw the other evening, Nikki!
The baby was reunited with mother after a 5 hour separation after the birth,
and needed to cry, calm, rest on the breast, in a cycle, until she could
calm down.
I describe feeding cues to parents as a cycle: hands to mouth, mouth opens,
if no breast in it, baby roots. This happens over and over again. I think
we really help parents when we describe what babies are doing as
predictable.
And Rachel describes exactly what often goes wrong in the hospital: a new
person comes in and "does something" when the really most important
something is the skin to skin time at the breast.
We need to keep reminding ourselves of this in this technological age of
pumps and tubes and complicated breastfeeding positions.
