<<3-NO FUNDING whatsoever by any company that in any way makes money when
women do not breastfeed.>>

Dang, Winnie -- you almost had me until this statement, and I realized that
I wouldn't make any money if women all breastfed well and perfectly.

Interestingly enough, the reason that IBCLCs have a business and are
working at all is because women have difficulty w/ breastfeeding.

Of course, I meant those that profit specifically from sale and use of
artificial feeding. You do raise an interesting question, however. If we
had a society where breastfeeding was truly the norm, fully supported, and
artificial feeding rarely indicated and even then by prescription only,
would LCs have a role? Just as there is a need for assistance and devices
to help some individuals walk, even though walking independently is the
norm, there will always be some mom/baby dyads that need some assistance.
This might be due to anatomical variations in either, medical conditions
that make "normal" breastfeeding a challenge, etc. We would not be spending
so much energy butting our heads against the walls of ignorance and
corporate greed. Then we could concentrate on how best to help with the
challenges rather than defencing ourselves and breastfeeding in general.

On the occasion of LLLIs 25th anniversary our Division Director asked her
personnel to dream about what it would be like on the 50th anniversary.
(What I wrote is somewhere buried in my files. I'll try to dig it out.) As
that anniversary draws near, I know that many of the things in my dream
still have not happened. As we approach ILCA's (and IBCLC's) 20th
anniversary, it would be fun to imagine and dream about where we would like
breastfeeding and our profession to be on the 40th anniversary.

Winnie
