Hello, Andrea.
I have over the years frequently heard about mothers getting itchy
and/or sore nipples (contact dermatitis) from exposure to some solid food that
baby ate, after which he breastfed. The crumbs or perhaps tiny amount of
digested food in the baby's saliva cause trouble for the mom and she needs to be
sure to rinse baby's mouth carefully whenever he has solid food. So, if moms can
have allergic reactions to solid foods babies eat, it makes perfect sense to
me that moms can also have allergic reactions to medications that enter baby's
mouth. It would be quite possible that some of the medication would still be
present in the baby's mouth, especially if mom breastfeeds shortly after
administering the medicine, to "wash the taste away".
