Re: Risky pill for nursing moms
      Good Housekeeping
      January 2004, p. 69

Dear Sir:

Having been a consultant pharmacist and expert on the use of medications and
breastfeeding for the past 25 years, I was quite dismayed at the
misinformation presented in the above article on the use of domperidone as a
“milk-boosting” medication (i.e., a galactogogue).

First of all, the American Academy of Pediatrics certainly does approve of
drugs for use in breastfeeding, with domperidone being one of those drugs.
The message on www.breastfeedingonline.com is true, gushing or not.

More than a “few” doctors are writing prescriptions for domperidone. Such
compounding using prescription-grade domperidone from the United States is
completely legal. Most women are not obtaining and using illegal imports as
there is simply no need to do so to obtain legally compounded domperidone on
legal prescriptions. Physicians who do prescribe domperidone in the United
States and those pharmacists who dispense these legal prescriptions do
monitor for the “red flag.”

Finally, your author sets up a straw man of “ordering foreign medications
over the Web” as very low quality drugs to further knock down the use of
domperidone when it is the issue of domperidone use that is the topic of
discussion.

Unless the statements of Dr. Anne Eglash and Dr. John Perrin are taken out
of context, I am astonished at their conclusions on the use of domperidone
as a galactogogue.

I believe that you owe your readers and the owner of
www.breastfeedingonline.com a retraction of the article and an article based
on the facts and true issue. The bottom line is that domperidone is well
used within the breastfeeding community with beneficial affects for mothers
and their breastfeeding infants.

Sincerely,

Frank J. Nice, RPh, DPA, CPHP
