Thanks for clarifying Jaye. I am in the same situation as the hospital LC
that you know. Beating my head against the wall sometimes because the
education is going so slowly and there's not enough time to both see
patients and educate staff! I KNOW most of the nurses that I work with have
good hearts and they work so hard to get babies latched, especially the
night shift. I want to tell them to RELAX, and let that mom do some skin to
skin and it will come without forcing, but it is so engrained that they have
to get that baby ON at least twice during their shift that they just can't
let go, even if it's a baby with a big tongue thrust (and we have a lot of
those---I'm trying to figure out who is doing the deep suctioning on these
babies that might be giving them such an oral aversion-I had FIVE babies in
one day that were thrusting off) and there's no way the baby is going to
latch without TIME. One of the nurses said that she felt so "free" after
following me around for a day, because she realized she didn't have to
"force" things with the baby. So, that was one nurse. Hopefully, the
message will keep getting passed on.

Jaye again:

First, I rarely assume anything anymore these days. :-) From this
particular hospital I never assume bad faith from the nurses. I know they
did not know what to do and am very glad they gave her the list.so I wasn't
criticizing.just frustrated because it happens all the time.I want them to
know more than they do and they don't. They often miss things like tongue
ties and such - their head LC is working very hard to get everyone educated
but it takes time. In fact she is working very hard to get ABM out of their
hospital and get them on their way to baby friendly. :-)

There are other hospitals in the area that hand out nipple shields and SNS's
like they are candy (like the SNS given to mom for a baby who was hurting
her with the latch and they told her that the latch was fine and that he
just need more milk.he had a classic tongue tie!). It just takes time, you
know? And with the new SoP I'll be contradicting medical advice all over
the place if I want to help the dyads actually BF.sigh.

Thanks for the opportunity to clarify! Have a great day!
