My second child, my son Tyler, is in third grade. On the night of Open House
the teacher asked us all to fill out a form about helping in the classroom
and check if we could drive on field trips, bake, be a classroom helper, talk
about our hobby or occupation, etc. When I filled out the form I wrote that
my occupation was LLL leader. When the classroom helping schedule came home
was I ever surprised to discover that I am the speaker for March and my topic
is breastfeeding! This is 3rd grade, folks! I told my son about it,
thinking that if he really freaked out I'd tell the teacher no. I don't want
to totally embarrass him in front of his friends. When I told him I was
coming into his class to talk about bf he said "Cool!" His class is studying
trash and recycling now and he wants to bring in my "Breastmilk is Green"
poster. (This same son was at the homebirth of our 4th child last year and
brought him in to school when he was two weeks old for Show And Tell.) I
speak to the high school child development class about once a year, but I'll
really have to think about what to tell 8 year olds. I'll let you all know
in the spring how it turns out.
