Hello:

I am in need of expert guidance, and documentation if available. I was called to see a 38 yr. old African-American female in SICU who is 6 weeks post partum with a fully breastfed thriving infant (at home). In the wee hours of yesterday morning she underwent an emergency quintuple heart bypass. One of her FIRST concerns upon awakening was when she might be able to see/nurse her infant and what to do in the meantime.

A pump is being rented for her use in the hospital and she is now being cared for by nurses that are themselves newly post-partum and pumping. She is being assisted to pump for comfort and to prevent engorgement. They are pumping and dumping due to the multitude of medications she is on...........fewer and fewer meds every hour.

Evidently she was 'told' by a physician (or his agent, not sure which) that she would never be able to return to feeding her baby her milk because of the medication she WAS getting. Amiodorone, an antiarrhythmic. Suggestions? Comments?

Thank you for your time and attention!
