Nikki,

The premise of LAM, like ecological breastfeeding, is frequent suckling, to suppress ovulation. If mother and baby are separated for extended amounts of time regularly, as opposed to an isolated occurrence, the effectiveness of the method is going to be diminished. I doubt a pump can be a suitable stand in, other than for milk expression.

However, there is a bell curve association regarding the amount of suckling each woman requires to suppress the return of fertility. One woman can nurse a few minutes every hour of the night and day, and find her menses returning at 4 months PP, and another who is nursing a toddler at naptime may not be menstruating until she has completely weaned...it can be quite variable between women.

Even so, the average age of return of fertility, in a woman who is with her baby all the time, feeding frequently and at night, is around 9 months PP. Using other fertility awareness methods can help alert her to her the probability of her menses resuming. For more information, see the details of the Sympto-Thermal Method at www.ccli.org.
