This is my first posting. I've been lurking for several weeks. The volume
of mail that I receive through this service is difficult to manage. I
appreciate advice based on best science as I am a birthing nurse/IBCLC working
at a tertiary medical center where research drives practice. I know there is a
lack of research in the area of BF management. We are starting lactation
program here, so I'll be posting cases for expert review.
Mom consults for gassy baby at three weeks old. Babe wieghed 7-14 at birth,
now 10-5. Mom wonders if I have ever heard of breastmilk "smelling musty, like
sweat or body odor". The milk from her right breast smells sweet, but from the
left it smells like body odor. What recommendations are appropriate for a
gassy baby who thriving? I suspect that this babe is processing a lot of milk
thruogh her little gut which may be underpopulated with flora at this time.
Discussed food theories with Mom. She opts to eliminate dairy for one week and
re-evaluate. She will also remove baby from breast during feed if she feels
latch is "slipping". What say all of you about milk that is "off" scented? Can
it be related to the baby's discomfort? Remedies? I look forward to your posts.
TIA, Kathleen.
