A breastfeeding mom called our clinic and wondered if there would be a
benefit if she introduced nuts into her diet so that her exclusively
breastfed 5 month-old baby would develop a tolerance to peanuts in a safe
way. Her husband has an allergy to peanuts, not peanut oil. She did not eat
peanuts throughout her pregnancy and has continured to avoid peanuts with
breastfeeding so far.

There was a presentation by Annick M. Gaye, MD Assistant Professor, Clinical
Pediatrician, University of Chicago at the ILCA Conference in Kansas City in
1996 entitled Breastfeeding and Food Allergies. I remember peanut allergy
was discussed, however, my notes are lacking. I have a short note: atopic -
chromosomes coming from parents. This doesn't mean anything to me now! Can
anyone help me out with this?

Thanks.

Kathy Bodden, RN, BScN, IBCLC.
