Y'know, Mimi, I never quite thought about it that way. That is rather
funny! Here in Illinois -- in our hospital at least, the OBs do do the circs
-- I wonder if that harkens back to the days when I was in nursing school
here in IL and they did 'em in the DR (moms signed the consent while in labor
so that in case it was a boy, they could do it then). Interestingly enough,
I wonder if the baby was as adversely affected by it then as none of them ate
for 24 hours anyway.

Of course, the bf rate was about 18% -- and when I think back to what we did
to bf moms back then, it's a wonder anyone left the hospital bf! Before bf,
the nurse (nursery nurse) would go in w/ her sterile tray which had tongs, a
basin of green soap and a basin of sterile water and several sponges. Mom's
nipples were washed w/ the green soap and then rinsed. Baby was weighed,
rushed in for the 2 minute feed, and then rushed back out for a weight.

As I recall, the moms were given trilene for an anesthetic -- it was in a
little mask sort of thing that they controlled themselves, so they could use
it through the end of the labor. I'm trying to remember what we used for
delivery, but boy, that's so long ago, I can't think if they got a caudal or
if they just continued to use the trilene (or penthrane).

OK, anyone else remember what OB was like in the 60's?
