One thing I've been noticing with regard to teeth and yeast is that
they often go hand in hand... baby cuts bottom teeth, suddenly mom wants to
wean bc the baby "is biting me" -- upon exam and more questions nipples are
pink, itchy, pain like needles during nursings... and I say, aha! yeast...
treat for yeast (usually gentian violet does the trick unless mom has a
history of yeast probs) and voila "teeth" pain goes away...
I think what's really going on is a combination of factors -- new
teeth create new mouth sensations, many babies clamp down on the nipple due
to teething (most commonly right before teeth erupt) many babies also
"slide" off the nipple at the end of a feed, especially when asleep; now a
new tooth breaks through and voila, the clamping, sliding or just mouthing
that goes on before and after actual milk intake can abrade the nipple.
These abrasions are great footholds for candida...
Top teeth often create their own host of problems when positioning
is less than perfect or if baby is a "bungie nurser" -- you know the kind,
looks around, twists off mom's lap, stands up, wants to nurse facing away
from mom... these are all opportunities for teeth to make contact with and
thus abrade the nipple and encourage our nemesis, candida albicans...
