I was able to be off for 12 weeks after the births of
both my children. I began pumping to build up my
stash at about 8-9 weeks postbirth. My eldest would
wake up at around 0500, then go back to sleep until
about 0800. I would pump in between these feeds. She
was also a one-breast-per-feed nurser, so for a few
weeks I pumped the "neglected" one after one or two
morning feeds. A short pumping session after she went
down for the night was also helpful. It is also
important to remind working moms that young infants
commonly take 1-3 ounces per feed. Filling up an 8
ounce standard bottle is not necessary at the
beginning--sometimes those big ol' bottles look pretty
intimidating!
