Has there been any explanation as to why mom is hoarding milk rather than
feeding it to baby (SNS, cup, etc.)? It is rather common for anorexics to
hoard food and then not eat it. In addition, it is not extremely unusual
for anorexic moms to be stressed about their children's weight gain and not
feed their children. What would be a normal weight gain in an infant would
probably be very threatening to an anorexic. I am concerned not only about
mom not nurturing baby while feeding by holding, but also that she may be
witholding milk from her baby. She may continue to pump to hoard milk, burn
calories, etc. I find it interesting that she knows exactly how much milk is
in the freezer. She isn't so malnourished and calorically deprived that
she's not making milk. I would recommend that this mom get help not only
from LLL but also from an R.D. and/or psychologist working with eating
disorders (often they work together).
