To Jan Aken: I can appreciate your being disturbed by
misspellings, some of them rendering words incomprehensible.
However, having a child with learning disabilities (LD), plus
having read that 10-20% of the population has some form of LD, I
have always assumed that this was the case in postings of certain
Lactnetters. I'm sure that you will agree with me that these
people are most highly valued, and should not be harrassed to try
to do "something" about their horrid spelling - which they are
unable to do in any case! Any parent of an LD child or person
with LD him/herself can tell horror stories of being humiliated
and punished for an affliction that not too many years ago was
officially called not LD, but MBD (minimal brain dysfunction).
BTW (in case you haven't gathered by now, this is one of my
several soapboxes), to the best of my knowledge, research is
being carried out now as to the hypothesis that obstetric
ultrasound is a risk factor for LD in the child. I have a private
hypothesis that breastfeeding ameliorates LD in the child - of
course, the possible mechanism of this is that bf raises the IQ,
so the person afflicted with LD is "smarter" and better able to
compensate (like my daughter did for 16 years until I took her to
be tested!).
Just like to finish off the soapbox by saying that I am **not**
angry, G-d forbid!, with Jan or anyone else. It *does* make me
sad that even now, how often learning disabilities go
unrecognized. I love all of you. Judy Knopf in Beer Sheva, Israel
