Just a personal anecdote on this issue: when
my son, now almost 6, was 8 weeks old, he required
a hernia repair. The policy of the hospital was that
I could stay with him overnight, but they brought an
incubator from the NICU for him to sleep in and a cot
for me. Of course, I kept him with me, including when
I went to sleep. He was still small enough to sleep on
my chest.
At about 2 AM the nurse came in to check on us, saw that
we were both sleeping soundly, and woke me up to tell me
that I shouldn't be sleeping with my son on me, that's
what the incubator was for. (The incubator had repeatedly
overheated over the course of the evening, not that
I had any intention of putting my son in it anyway.)
I explained that we were fine, and this is how I sleep
with my son every night.
She walked out rather frustrated and came back in
about 1/2 an hour later (just long enough for me to
fall back asleep) for me to sign a form that, if he
fell out of bed, I wouldn't sue them, or some such
thing.

We went home the next morning and could sleep
however we wanted without having to sign waivers.

Seems to me that, as several people have mentioned,
healing is much quicker when we have loved ones around.
There is only so much a hospital can do in the healing
department. what's important is that the medical establishment
begin to recognize that and include parents and loved ones
in the healing process.
