Hello, my name is Angela Keplin and I am a Junior II nursing student at
the University of North Dakota. I joined this listserv to learn more
about breastfeeding. I hope to one day be a O.B. Registered Nurse.
Therefore, I will be working with alot of mom's and breastfed infants.
I am particularly curious about breastfed infants and
hyperbilirubinemia. Is inadequate breastfeeding greatly associated with
hyperbilirubinemia in full term infants?
In one study by Harris, Bernbaum, Polin, Zimmerman, & Polin, (2001),
they found that there is an occurence of hyperbilirubinemia with
inadequate establishment of
breastfeeding. However, this article also takes into account early
discharge which may affect breastfeeding education. In a second study,
the Subcommittee on Hyperbilirubinemia, (2004), found that inadequate
establishment of breastfeeding is a risk factor for hyperbilirubinemia.
These two studies establish there is a great association between
inadequate breastfeeding and
hyperbilirubinemia. A third study by Gartner, Herrarias, & Sebring
(1998),points out that severe unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia is a
direct result of inadequate
breastfeeding.
I would appreciate any information that would help me further my
education about this subject.
