Catherine-my experience with a nearby speech pathologist (who works with
babies and children with suck disorders) is that tongue tremors do indeed
often signal muscle fatigue. This child is using so much energy in holding
his tongue in a "tense" position that he does fatigue, and has to rest it.
His overall hypotonia are of concern-is there a diagnosed reason for this?
In so many cases, the intervention of a good OT or speech pathologist, etc.
can make a tremendous difference. I would encourage this mom to seek one out
if there is anyone near you. A good relationship with such a professional can
be a real asset to an LC also. Our local SP even did a whole afternoon
seminar with our Fla. LCA, teaching all of us how to evaluate suck, and do
simpler exercises to assist suck. She was berated by some of her colleagues
as sharing too much of her skill with the consultants! Fortunately, she
doesn't see it that way!
