There are some other things they can try to be more comfortable:
1.  sleep with the head of the bed elevated (we used to put our ironing
board under mattress at the head of the bed to elevate us evenly without
pillows whenever my son had congestion)
2.  humidify the air (I don't know where you live so you may be in an arid
environment)
3.  if nursing while the mom is lying down, mom can try to have the baby
"sit up" to nurse on the top breast.  This can be tricky with a 6 week old
but maybe the mother's partner/support person can help
