Not wanting to repeat anything anyone's already said, I'd just like to add
I've discovered (ok well for myself, I am sure others already knew this)
that there are some moms are who are going to work not because of maternity
leave being inadequate.  It's because *they want to* and no they *would
not* stay home if they 'could' or had some great leave.  They want to work
and bottlefeed while at work, they are going to work because they feel
that's best for them and their situation, and they don't see some big
problem with a child being in othercare. They have no intention of ever
staying home and have no clue why anyone would want to.  Whether or not I
agree is irrelevant.  The fact is even with a 3 yr maternity leave, they
would *not* be home, they would choose not to take it, they want to be in
the office.
