Bethany amkes an excellent point.  We can certainly improve on the
quality of information available for nurses to use in working with
breastfeeding moms/babies, but that doesn't guarantee that their
attitudes will be helpful.
I think the key is still their own personal experiences such as;

"You're attacking me when you say breast is best because I bottle fed"
"I didn't breastfeed and my kids turned out fine..."
"Breastfeeding was painful for me-mom just has to get used to it"
"Breastfeeding repulses me-I'm uncomfortable discussing it with mothers"

"I had..................................(negative experience) when
breastfeeding-moms have to have an alternative"
"I wasn't brestfed and I'm fine"
"I tried, but it didn't work out.  I don't want other moms to feel what
I did (guilt, regret, anger, etc.) so I will be very supportive of
supplementing"

There are many more, but these attitudes don't go away with education
alone.  To often I think these aren't on the surface-the nurse amy not
know such an attitude is behind her current breastfeeding teaching.
